Seascapes I Original Paintings by Mane Artist, J. P. Gaudette |
BASS HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE Built in 1858 Acadia National Park Maine Located on the southwest point of Desert Island, this is a picturesque rocky coast noted for attracting photographers & artists. |
WRECK OF THE EMPRESS Oct. 28, 1881 Kennebunkport, Maine This 121-ton schooner was bound from New York City to Titcomb's Wharf on the Kennebunk River with 206 tons of hard coal. Struggling against poor visibility, she missed the turn into the river and was dashed up on Fox Point. All hands made it to shore safely, but the hull heeled over at low tide and within a week broke in two. The remains of the Express were sold to a wrecking crew for $41, her cargo was auctioned off, and her sails, shown drying along the shore, were salvaged. |
WINDS OF FATE One ship drives east, another drives west With the selfsame winds that blow. 'Tis the set of sails and not the gales Which tells us the way to go. ---Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1850-1919 |
"The ocean,
king of mountains
and the mighty continents
are not heavy burdens to bear
when compared To the burden
of not repaying the
world's kindness."
