OLDE GRIST MILL ©
|
The Olde Grist Mill 1774 East Lebanon, Maine This water powered grist mill and shingle mill was built of hand-hewn timbers in 1774 by Joseph Hardison. Millstones were used to grind the grain from neighboring farms. It was a community mill. Each man helped to raise it and each ran if for a day when his turn came around. Now a National Historic Site, it was in process of being restored to pre-Civil War running condition back in 1976. Small industrial buildings like this one are precursors of the first textile mills. |
FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD
It seems to me I'd like to go
Where bells don't ring, nor whistles blow,
Nor clocks don't strike, nor gongs sound,
And I'd have stillness all around.
If 'tweren't for sight and sound and smell,
I'd like the city pretty well,
But when it comes to getting rest,
I like the country lots the best.
